Retro Tapes review

Dust off your old cassette players because it’s time to take a trip back to the 80s with the Retro Tapes Cluster Link slot game from Push Gaming. The developer has found plenty of success in the past with cluster-pay slot games, with titles like Jammin' Jars and Jammin' Jars 2 being among its biggest hits. Is Retro Tapes Cluster Link just a reskin of these games though? Or does it manage to play its own track? Let’s take a look in this Retro Tapes Cluster Link slot review.

Retro Tapes Theme and Design

Retro Tapes goes full 1980s with its visuals and soundtrack. The slot is set to a dark blue, neon background, with sound bars pulsating out of the borders of the reels as you play. The reel themselves are populated by tapes of various different colours and designs, with coins and Wild symbols also making an appearance. The soundtrack is suitably retro, making you feel as though you have stepped foot into a techno bar during the time period.

How to Play Retro Tapes

The base game for Retro Tapes Cluster Link is a highly volatile slice of slot action. Players can land wins in the game by using a cluster pay mechanic. They can secure wins by landing clusters of five or more symbols. As such, there are no traditional paylines in the game.

When it comes to winning potential, the slot packs a punch, offering players a maximum win of 10,000x their stake. It also has an above-average RTP of 96.47%.

Retro Tapes Bonus Features

The Retro Tapes slot really springs to life with its bonus features. Firstly, the game uses a cascading wins mechanic, with winning clusters disappearing off the grid and being replaced with new ones. This continues until there are no winning combos left.

There are two types of Wild symbols that appear in the game. The first is the Wild Tape, and the second is the Wild Multiplier. The Wild Tape symbol will substitute for all other symbols except the Wild Multiplier and the Magnet. Each Wild Tape has a multiplier attached that increases every time it is used in a win. Wild Tapes are sticky during cascades and will disappear at the end of them.

The Wild Multiplier works with the Wild Tape. It has a multiplier attached of up to x5 and it distributes this to Wild Tapes if they are on the reels. It then becomes an Instant Prize symbol. Instant Prize symbols can land on any spin and can be x1, x2, x5, x10, x25, x50, x100, x250, x500 or x1,000. These will pay out when part of a winning cluster of five Instant Prize symbols.

The other symbol you want to keep an eye out for is the Magnet. When this lands, it will attract all instances of a selected symbol to its position, creating a cluster and potentially triggering a win. It is also possible for them to attract Instant Prize symbols.

The Cluster Links feature is triggered when players land a specified number of Instant Prizes clustered together on the reels. This can build the biggest wins in the game.

Landing three of the Tape Wild symbols anywhere on the reels will trigger the Top Charts feature. The triggering symbols, as well as any Instant Prize symbols, will stick to the reels for the round. Three, four, five, or six Wilds trigger six, eight, 10 or 12 spins respectively.

During the round, each empty spot can land one of the following:

  • Wild Tape – This acts as it does in the base game, but it also awards two extra spins.
  • Wild Multiplier - This substitutes for other symbols to make winning combinations. A multiplier is attached and then applied to the win.
  • Instant Prize – These stick to the reels until the end of the round.
  • Magnet Symbol – These pull in Instant Prize symbols.
  • Extra Spins Symbols – This adds one or two extra spins.
  • Blank Tape – This does nothing and doesn’t remain on the reels.

Retro Tapes Slot Verdict

On the face of it, it would be easy to think Retro Tapes Cluster Link is just another Jammin' Jars-style game from Push Gaming. While there are similarities in the game visually and during the base game, there are plenty of differences with the bonus features. The Top Charts Feature is the biggest selling point here and can lead to some big wins. Those who are fans of highly volatile cluster slots are going to want to hit the spin button on this one.
